Essential answers
The five questions every first-time visitor asks — answered in brief, with a full guide behind each one.
How many days do you need in Córdoba?
Two full days is the sweet spot: one for the Mezquita, the Alcázar and the Judería, one for Palacio de Viana, San Basilio and an unhurried tapas crawl. A single well-planned day covers the headline monuments; a third day opens up Medina Azahara or a day trip.
See the 2-day itineraryWhen is the best time to visit?
March to May and September to October — mild days, open patios and the festival calendar. May alone packs the Patio Festival, the Crosses and the Feria. July and August regularly pass 36°C, so summer visits run on early mornings and late evenings.
Read the seasonal guideWhere should you stay?
First visit: the Judería or the historic centre, where every major monument is a short walk away. San Basilio is quieter, with authentic patios and proximity to the Alcázar. San Pedro has the best prices and the liveliest tapas bars.
Compare neighbourhoodsHow do you get to Córdoba?
The AVE high-speed train is the quickest option: about 45 minutes from Seville, 1 hour from Málaga and 1h45 from Madrid. No direct international flights land in Córdoba — the nearest airports are Seville (SVQ) and Málaga (AGP), both with onward AVE connections.
Compare transport optionsWhat do you need to book ahead?
Only the Mezquita really demands it — book at least a week ahead in spring and autumn. Accommodation needs two to three months of lead time for the Patio Festival in May and Holy Week; everything else can wait until the week of your trip.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book?
Mezquita tickets: Book at least 1 week ahead, especially in high season (April–May, September–October).
Accommodation: 2–3 months ahead for the Patio Festival (May) and Holy Week (March–April). 1 month is enough in low season.
Is one day in Córdoba enough?
Enough for the headline monuments, yes: Mezquita at opening, the Judería before the coaches arrive, Alcázar gardens, Roman Bridge at dusk.
What a single day costs you is the city after 6pm, when the day-trippers leave and Córdoba gets its streets back. See the 1-day itinerary for the exact circuit.
Can I visit Córdoba as a day trip from Seville or Madrid?
From Seville: Easily — the AVE takes about 45 minutes each way. See the Seville day trip guide.
From Madrid: Doable in a long day at under 2 hours by AVE each way. The Madrid train guide covers timetables and booking strategy.
Is the Mezquita free to enter?
General admission is paid, but entry is free Monday to Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30am for individual visitors — quiet, no groups, and the best light of the day.
Full prices, night visits and booking tips in the Mezquita ticket guide.
What is the average budget for 2 days?
For a 2-day/1-night stay, expect roughly:
- • Budget: €150–220 (hostel, set lunches)
- • Mid-range: €300–440 (3-star hotel, decent restaurants)
- • Comfort: €550–860 (4-star hotel, good restaurants)
See our detailed budget guide.
What is the best time to avoid the crowds?
Low season: November to February (excluding Christmas holidays). Mild temperatures (10–18°C) and few tourists.
Avoid: Mid-April to early May (Patio Festival), Holy Week, and July–August (extreme heat + tourists).
See our seasonal guide.
Do I need to hire a car?
Not recommended for the city itself: The historic centre is pedestrian and compact. Parking is expensive and scarce.
Useful for: A trip to Medina Azahara (10 km) or an Andalusia road trip (Seville, Granada).
Alternative: AVE train to other cities, shuttle bus to Medina Azahara.
How walkable is Córdoba?
Very. The historic centre is flat, compact and largely pedestrianised — every major monument sits within a 2km radius of the Mezquita.
Wear shoes that handle cobblestones, and see the practical guide for buses and taxis when the summer heat makes walking unwise.
