Driving in Córdoba: Roads, ZBE & Parking

Routes from major cities, Low Emission Zone rules, the best car parks near the Mezquita, and practical tips for arriving by car in 2026.

Córdoba is easy to reach by car from Madrid (4h), Seville (1h45) and Málaga (2h), but driving inside the historic centre is another matter. A Low Emission Zone now restricts access, parking near the Mezquita is limited, and the medieval street layout was not designed for modern vehicles. This guide covers the routes in, the ZBE rules you need to know, and where to park without stress.

Low Emission Zone (ZBE) — 2026 rules

Córdoba launched its Zona de Bajas Emisiones in February 2023. It covers the historic centre and operates 24/7. Restrictions tightened in 2026.

Vehicles allowed in 2026

  • Zero (0) sticker — electric and hydrogen vehicles
  • Eco sticker — plug-in hybrids, newer low-emission vehicles
  • Residents registered in the zone
  • Hotel guests with plate registered at check-in
  • Vehicles with PMR (disability) permits

Vehicles restricted in 2026

  • B sticker — Euro 3–4 engines (approx. 2006–2010 models)
  • C sticker — Euro 2 (approx. 2000–2005)
  • No sticker — pre-2000 vehicles
Enforcement is via ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). Fines apply. Check your rental contract for liability.

Check your DGT sticker

Look inside the windscreen for the coloured environmental label. If renting, ask the rental company which category your vehicle falls into before driving into the historic centre. When in doubt, park outside the zone — the Mezquita is walkable from several peripheral car parks.

  • Priego de Córdoba — 80 km south, charming baroque town, 1h drive

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive into Córdoba's historic centre?

Technically yes on some streets, but it is not practical. The historic centre has a Low Emission Zone (ZBE), extensive pedestrian zones, and very limited parking. Most visitors are better off parking at a peripheral car park and walking 10–20 minutes to the Mezquita.

What is the Low Emission Zone (ZBE) in Córdoba?

Córdoba's Zona de Bajas Emisiones covers the historic centre (Mezquita, Judería, Alcázar area) and operates 24/7. Only vehicles with an Eco or Zero (0) DGT environmental sticker can enter freely. Vehicles with B or C stickers (most pre-2010 cars) are restricted from 2026 onwards. Rental car visitors should check the DGT label inside the windscreen before driving into the centre.

How do I get ZBE access as a hotel guest?

If your hotel is inside or near the ZBE, provide your vehicle registration number at check-in. The hotel registers the plate in the city's system, granting access for the duration of your stay. Confirm this with your hotel before arrival.

Where should I park near the Mezquita?

La Ribera car park (by the Guadalquivir river) is the closest paid option at around €15.50/day — a short walk from the Mezquita. Parking Alcázar Viejo and Parking Paseo de la Victoria sit just outside the ZBE boundary and are practical alternatives. Free parking is available on the south bank near the Calahorra Tower (10–15 min walk across the Roman Bridge).

Is the A-4 motorway toll-free from Madrid?

Yes. The A-4 from Madrid to Córdoba (about 400 km) is a free motorway with no toll gates. Spain does not require a vignette for motorways. Journey time from Madrid is approximately 4 hours in normal traffic.
