Córdoba gave the world the Mezquita, a mosque-cathedral built in 785 that still stops people cold. Granada answers with the Alhambra, a Nasrid palace complex so elaborate it took two centuries to finish. The contrast between the two cities is real and worth the journey. That said, go in clear-eyed: this is a long day. You'll leave Córdoba before 8am and won't be back until close to midnight. If you can spare two days, stay overnight in Granada. If you only have one, this guide tells you exactly how to use it.
How to get there
Train
AVE, Avant or Alvia. Córdoba central station Granada central station.
Book on RenfeBus ALSA
All journeys are direct. More buses on Fridays and Sundays.
Book on ALSACar
Ideal if you want to stop along the way (Priego de Córdoba).
The 7:38am AVE from Córdoba gets you into Granada by 9:10am, which lines up perfectly with a 10am Nasrid Palaces slot. That's the train I take. Book it the night before if you can, prices on Renfe creep up fast. The 8:38am works too, but you'll be cutting it close at the Alhambra gate.

What to see in Granada in one day
The Alhambra
A masterpiece of Nasrid architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba and the Generalife gardens require at least 3–4 hours.
- • Patio de los Leones
- • Sala de los Abencerrajes
- • Generalife gardens
- • Entry: €19 (full visit)
- • Duration: 3–4h minimum
- • Fixed entry time slots
The Albaicín
A hilltop former medina with picturesque white alleyways. UNESCO World Heritage. Perfect for the afternoon after the Alhambra.
- • El Bañuelo: medieval Arab baths
- • Paseo de los Tristes: terraces with views
- • Church of San Salvador
Mirador de San Nicolás
The best viewpoint over the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop. Perfect at sunset.
Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot.
The Alcázar, a highlight before or after your day trip to Granada
Two UNESCO sites and a sunset viewpoint sounds like a lot for a single day. It is, a little. But the Alhambra in the morning and the Albaicín in the afternoon flow naturally into each other: you exit the palace complex, walk downhill, and you're already in the old medina. Here's how to sequence it without feeling like you're racing a clock.

Free tapas with your drink in Granada's traditional bars.
Explore the Albaicín
White alleyways, carmenes (garden houses), El Bañuelo, Paseo de los Tristes.
Sunset at the Mirador de San Nicolás
Spectacular view of the Alhambra lit by the setting sun.
Return to Córdoba
Last train at 9:55 pm. Arriving in Córdoba around 11:30 pm.
Granada gives you free tapas. Use that.
Unlike most Spanish cities, Granada still follows the old tradition of serving a free tapa with every drink. Order a glass of wine or a beer at a bar in the Albaicín and a plate arrives without you asking. Good plates, too: jamón, fried fish, sometimes a small stew. Budget about half what you'd spend on food in Córdoba and you'll eat just as well. The bars around Calle Navas and the lower Albaicín are the most reliable for this.

Granada as a day trip is genuinely worth it, but you do feel the distance on the way back. If you have two nights free, stay in Granada and take the reverse trip back to Córdoba at your own pace. If it's a day trip or nothing, take the 7:38am train, follow the itinerary above, and you'll get home tired but not regretful.
