Getting to Córdoba: Flights, Trains & Transport
From London, New York, Paris or anywhere in Europe: real journey times, real prices, and which route makes sense for your trip.
Ten years covering Córdoba's UNESCO heritage sites, sourcing from Junta de Andalucía documentation.
Córdoba has no commercial airport, but that's not the inconvenience it sounds like. Booking tip: The biggest price gaps are on the Madrid and Seville routes, where budget operators (Ouigo from €9, AVLO from €7) compete directly with Renfe AVE. For Barcelona and Granada, iryo and AVLO low-cost fares appear on selected departures. Check all operators side by side on Omio or Trainline before booking direct.
Travelling with a dog? Renfe accepts small dogs (under 10 kg) in a carrier for a €35 surcharge, and larger dogs (10–40 kg) on selected long-distance AVE routes with advance booking and a 40-minute pre-departure check-in. See our pet-friendly guide for current rules and how to pre-book.

2026 train operators: Madrid–Córdoba
Spain's high-speed rail market is now fully open to competition. Four operators run the Madrid–Córdoba route, giving you more choice and lower fares than ever.
| Operator | Journey time | Price range | Booking | Luggage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renfe AVE | 1h45 | €20–45 | renfe.com | 3 bags (25 kg each) | Most frequent, 20+ daily |
| iryo | 1h50 | €18–39 | iryo.eu | 2 bags (25 kg each) | Newer trains, competitive prices |
| Ouigo | 2h10 | €9–25 | ouigo.com/es | 1 cabin bag free, extra €5–9 | Budget option, fewer departures |
| AVLO (Renfe) | 1h50 | €7–35 | renfe.com | 1 bag (25 kg) + 1 cabin | Renfe's low-cost brand |
Tip: The cheapest fares (AVLO from €7, Ouigo from €9) go on sale 60–90 days before departure and sell out fast. All four operators depart from Madrid Puerta de Atocha. iryo launched its Madrid–Córdoba–Seville–Málaga service in 2023; Ouigo is SNCF's Spanish subsidiary.

From Barcelona (direct — no change at Madrid)
Barcelona has direct high-speed rail to Córdoba, so you don't need to change trains in Madrid. Around six departures run daily, covering the route in 4h45 to 5h30 depending on the service.
Renfe AVE and iryo both run direct services from Barcelona Sants. AVLO (Renfe's low-cost brand) covers the route on selected departures.
Budget fares start at €24–25 on iryo and AVLO with 2–4 weeks advance booking. Standard Renfe AVE fares run €35–55. Last-minute prices climb sharply.
Barcelona Sants to Córdoba Central: 4h45–5h30. Some services continue to Seville and Málaga — Barcelona–Seville trains all stop at Córdoba and can offer better timing or pricing on certain days.
Alternative: fly Barcelona to Seville or Málaga
If train fares are high on your date, Vueling and Ryanair fly Barcelona El Prat to Seville in around 1h30, often for €25–60. From Seville, the AVE reaches Córdoba in 45 minutes. Barcelona to Málaga is similarly priced and timed. The total journey stays under 4 hours, and you avoid any risk of train connection stress. The drawback: you arrive at a different airport city rather than continuing through on one ticket. Worth checking both options when you price your trip.
Is Córdoba worth a stop on a Barcelona–Andalusia trip?
Yes, straightforwardly. Many Barcelona-based trips end in Málaga or Seville, and the classic Andalusian circuit puts all three within range of each other. Córdoba slots in naturally: Barcelona by AVE to Córdoba (half a day on the train), two nights in Córdoba, then 45 minutes to Seville. The Mezquita-Catedral alone takes a full morning. Two nights gives you the old town, the Judería, the Roman Bridge at dusk, and dinner with flamenco at one of the city's tablaos without rushing. If you only have one night, it still works: arrive by 3pm, walk the historic centre, leave the next morning.
By car
Driving routes
- From France: Paris Córdoba 1,500 km (14–15h) via Bordeaux–Irun–Madrid. Toulouse 1,100 km (10–11h). Marseille 1,300 km (12–13h) via Barcelona.
- From the UK: Eurotunnel/ferry to Calais, then drive through France and Spain. London Córdoba ~2,000 km (20h+). Best split over 2–3 days.
- Within Spain: Madrid 4h (400 km via A-4), Seville 1h45 (140 km via A-4), Málaga 2h (165 km via A-45), Granada 2h15 (200 km via A-92/A-45).
Practical tips
- Plan a stopover (Burgos, Madrid or Barcelona)
- Córdoba's historic centre is pedestrianised: park at Alcázar Viejo (€15/day) or the station (€12/day). See our parking guide
- No motorway vignette required in Spain
- Speed limits: 120 km/h motorway, 90 km/h single carriageway
- A car is useful for visiting Medina Azahara (8 km) and surrounding villages
Low Emission Zone (ZBE) — important for drivers
Córdoba's Zona de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE) covers the historic centre — the Mezquita, Judería and Alcázar area — and operates 24/7. Only vehicles with an Eco or Zero (0) DGT environmental sticker can enter freely. Vehicles with B or C stickers (most pre-2010 cars, including many rental vehicles) are restricted from 2026 onwards.
Rental cars: check the DGT sticker inside the windscreen before driving into the centre. Hotel guests can register their vehicle plate at check-in for zone access. The practical fallback: park outside the zone (Parking Alcázar Viejo, Parking Paseo de la Victoria) and walk or take the bus 10–15 min to the Mezquita. Full details in our driving in Córdoba guide.
Córdoba's historic centre is best explored on foot once you arrive
By coach
Flixbus / BlaBlaCar Bus (international)
- From France: Paris Córdoba 18–22h with a change in Madrid or Barcelona. €30–60 one way.
- From elsewhere: Flixbus connects most European capitals to Madrid or Barcelona, where you transfer to a Spanish service.
- Comfort: Wi-Fi, USB sockets, reclining seats. Book at flixbus.com.
Our tip: International coaches are a budget option but very slow (14–18h). For domestic Spanish bus routes (Madrid–Córdoba, Seville–Córdoba, Málaga–Córdoba), see our local transport guide.
BlaBlaCar ridesharing
BlaBlaCar is widely used across Spain for intercity travel. The app matches drivers going between cities with passengers heading the same way. It is not a taxi service: drivers are making the trip anyway and split fuel costs. If you have a flexible schedule and want a budget option with more comfort than a coach, it is worth checking.
What to expect on common routes
- Madrid to Córdoba: The most active route. Multiple offers most days. Drivers list their own meetup points, typically near metro stations or on the city outskirts. Typical price: €15–25 per seat. Journey time around 3h 30min to 4h depending on whether the driver makes intermediate stops.
- Seville to Córdoba: Available but less frequent than the Madrid route. Typical price: €8–12. Journey under 2 hours. Worth checking if you want to avoid the AVE booking process for a short hop.
- Málaga to Córdoba: Fewer listings than Madrid or Seville, but they exist, particularly on weekends. Typical price: €10–15.
- Granada to Córdoba: Available on BlaBlaCar, often good value given that direct train fares on this route run €25–50. Typical price €12–20, 2h 30min.
How to book and when it makes sense
- How to book: Search at blablacar.es or via the app. Set your origin and destination, pick a date, and browse available rides. Payment goes through the platform; no cash on the day.
- When it makes sense: Budget travelers with flexibility on departure time. Prices undercut the AVE on most routes, though journey times are 2–3x longer. Also useful when no convenient train or bus departs at your preferred hour.
- When it does not make sense: Fixed itineraries with tight connections. BlaBlaCar drivers occasionally adjust times or cancel. If you're catching a flight or a booked tour, take the train.
- BlaBlaCar Bus: The platform also operates its own scheduled coaches (BlaBlaCar Bus, formerly Ouibus), distinct from private rideshares. These appear in the same search and are closer to Flixbus in how they operate. The coach section above covers international options in that category.
Practical note: BlaBlaCar availability is highest Thursday to Sunday on Spanish routes, when drivers make weekend trips. Monday and Tuesday departures have fewer listings. If you're travelling mid-week, the bus or AVE is the more reliable choice.
