Suggested 1-day itinerary
The first AVE leaves Granada around 8am. Take it and you'll have a full day in Córdoba with time to spare for the return train.
Departure from Granada
AVE train from Granada station. Arrive at Córdoba Central around 9:25am. Walk or take a bus to the historic centre (15-20 min).
Mezquita-Cathedral + Jewish Quarter
Visit the Mezquita first (2-3 hours). Then wander the narrow lanes of the Judería and find the Calleja de las Flores.
Lunch + Local flavours
Time for a proper Cordoban lunch. Try salmorejo, berenjenas con miel or flamenquín at a local restaurant. A menú del día runs €12-15.
Alcázar + Roman Bridge
Visit the Alcázar and its gardens (1-2h). Walk across the Roman Bridge for a classic photo of the Mezquita skyline. Stop for a coffee or browse other neighbourhoods.
Return to Granada
Evening train back to Granada (around 6-7pm). Arrive by 8:30pm, in time for dinner back in Granada.
Mezquita booking tips
Free entry window
Monday to Saturday, 8:30-9:30am, the Mezquita opens for free. Access is limited to certain areas and you cannot enter the cathedral nave, but the forest of columns is fully accessible.
Arrive by 8:15am to queue. This slot fills quickly in spring and autumn.
Pre-booking
Standard entry costs €13. Book online at the official Cabildo website to skip the ticket queue. Tickets often sell out for mornings in peak season (March-May, September-October).
See our Mezquita tickets guide for step-by-step booking instructions.
What to eat in Córdoba
Córdoba has its own culinary identity, distinct from Granada's tapas culture. These are the dishes to look for:
Salmorejo
A cold tomato soup thicker and creamier than gazpacho, topped with jamón ibérico and hard-boiled egg. Available everywhere, year round.
Flamenquín
Rolled pork loin stuffed with jamón serrano, breaded and fried. Córdoba's signature tapa. Best shared as a starter.
Berenjenas con miel
Fried aubergine slices drizzled with local honey. Sweet-savoury and addictive. Found in most traditional restaurants.
Budget lunch spots near the Mezquita
Look for the menú del día (set lunch) at restaurants a few streets back from the Mezquita. Prices drop noticeably once you leave the immediate tourist ring. Expect to pay €12-15 for a starter, main, dessert and drink.
See our full budget guide for restaurant recommendations and more tips.
Practical tips
Luggage storage
Córdoba train station has coin-operated lockers in the main hall (€4-6/day). Private storage services are also available in the city centre, a short walk from the Mezquita. Drop your bags first so you can explore hands-free.
Summer heat warning
Córdoba is one of the hottest cities in Europe. July and August regularly hit 42-45 C. If visiting in summer, start early, take a long lunch break indoors, and carry water. The Alcázar gardens offer shade in the afternoon.
Station to centre
Córdoba Central station is 2 km from the Mezquita. Walk (20 min along Avenida de América), take bus lines 3, 4 or 5 (10 min, ~€1.30), or grab a taxi (~€8-10). See our getting to Córdoba guide for details.
