Churros a minute from the Tendillas
Cafetería Don Pepe sits at Calle Diego de León 6, about 50 metres from Plaza de las Tendillas, and has been part of the city centre's breakfast routine since 1977. The Ortiz Cebada family has run it since the 1980s. It is the churrería to pick when you want the traditional Córdoba breakfast without leaving the middle of town.
What to order
The churros here are light, almost airy. Elsewhere in Spain they would pass for porras, the fatter, softer cousin; in Córdoba locals also call them jeringos. Dip them in the thick hot chocolate, which is also available lactose-free.
If you want something savoury, the tostada de jamón with serrano ham is the best seller. Other toasts include tuna and tomato, zurrapa de lomo, sobrasada, and cooked ham with cheese. Coeliac visitors should note that churro dough is wheat flour; the nearby Veca Café is the gluten-free option.
The room
Don Pepe is usually busy, with a bar, a terrace and extra tables in the room downstairs. Expect a crowd at peak breakfast time. Prices are described as fair, with no figures confirmed.
