A horse-drawn carriage tour is the traditional way to see Córdoba: a horse-drawn coach through cobblestone lanes while a coachman shares local history. Slower than the electric tuk-tuk, but more romantic — and the closest thing to how visitors arrived in this city a century ago.
How it works
You book a tour for 1 to 4 people (some carriages take up to 6). The coachman usually waits near the Mezquita, either at Plaza del Triunfo or along the Paseo de la Ribera near the Roman Bridge. The carriages are traditionally decorated — padded seats, often with a canopy for shade.
The standard tour lasts 45 minutes and covers the historic centre: past the Mezquita, the Alcázar, the Judería and the Roman walls. The coachman speaks Spanish and sometimes English. For €50–70 per carriage (total price, not per person), it's a good way to get an overview before exploring on foot.
Tours available
Short tour (30–40 minutes) — A quick loop of the historic centre. Mezquita, Alcázar, Judería, return. Around €50–60 for the whole carriage. Good if you want the experience without committing a whole afternoon.
Standard tour (45 minutes to 1 hour) — The most popular option. Same route with photo stops at the main monuments. The coachman leaves time to step down for a few shots in front of the Mezquita and Roman Bridge. Around €65–75.
Long tour with San Basilio (1h30) — An extension into the San Basilio neighbourhood, known for its flowering patios. Worth adding in May during the Festival de los Patios. Around €90–110.
Carriages stand by from 10 am to 8 pm in high season (April to October), with reduced availability in winter. No booking needed for short tours if you turn up in the afternoon, but in July–August call in the morning to secure a spot.
When to choose the carriage
For couples: The clip-clop of hooves on cobblestones, the leisurely pace, the shade of the canopy. More photogenic than a tuk-tuk, and more atmospheric than walking.
For a traditional Córdoba experience: Horse-drawn carriages have been part of the city scene for decades. It's a local practice, not a modern tourist gimmick.
In summer heat: Unlike walking, you stay seated in the shade. The horse moves at its own pace, creating a slight breeze. Less air-conditioned than an electric tuk-tuk, but considerably more pleasant than a free walking tour when it's 40°C.
Not ideal for: detailed explanations in English — coachmen speak Spanish and basic English. If you want a proper English-language guide, the guided Mezquita tour or a tuk-tuk tour is a better fit.
Practical information
Booking: Not required for short tours. Find the carriages at Plaza del Triunfo and negotiate directly with the coachman. Prices are posted. For long tours or in high season, phone ahead in the morning.
Accessibility: Boarding requires a fairly high step. Not suitable for wheelchair users — the tuk-tuk is a better option for reduced mobility.
Children: Kids generally love horses. No baby seats or seatbelts, though. Children need to sit calmly for 45 minutes — from about age 4–5 this usually works.
Cost and what you get
At €60–70 for 45 minutes, it's more expensive per minute than a hop-on hop-off bus (€21 for 24 hours), but the experience is different. A carriage tour is a moment, not transport. Split between 4 people it comes down to €15–18 each, which is reasonable.
Animal welfare
A fair question: are the horses well treated? Córdoba's carriages are regulated by the city council with regular veterinary checks. Horses work no more than 6 hours per day, with breaks every hour. In summer, they go out only in the morning and late afternoon, not during the hottest hours. Coachmen generally take care of their animals — they're their livelihood.
