What is Naturaleza Encendida?

Naturaleza Encendida — Navegantes is an outdoor light and video-mapping show installed in the gardens of the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. The show runs through the cypress paths, terraces, and reflecting pools that surround this 14th-century fortress, using over 750 technical elements: laser grids, projection surfaces, sound columns, and light installations across three garden zones.

The narrative follows Christopher Columbus's 1486 audiences with Ferdinand and Isabella; this was the first of several meetings in the building before the Catholic Monarchs agreed to fund his expedition six years later. The format is self-paced: you enter when your slot opens and walk the circuit at your own speed, no audioguide and no tour leader.

The Encounter

Columbus before the court. The garden geometry shows through cooler, more formal projections.

The Journey

Open terraces with the widest projections. Moving light and open-water sound design.

The Discovery

The gardens lit with warmer tones as the circuit closes on the Americas.

For the full show description, technical details, and a comparison with the Mezquita night tour, see the Naturaleza Encendida activity page.

The Alcázar gardens by day. At night, the same cypress paths and stone terraces become the circuit for the light show.

Entry point: Reina Isabel entrance

Entry to the show is through the Reina Isabel entrance on Avenida del Alcázar s/n, not the standard daytime Alcázar entrance. Wheelchair-accessible entry is available via the Reja del Jardín entrance. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot; the queues at the gate clear quickly once the slot opens.
“The scent of orange blossom lingers in the Alcázar gardens long after dark, even in October, when the projections run over cold stone.”

What to expect on the night

The stone terraces and pool edges that feel airy during the day close in slightly at night, which is part of the effect. The gardens cool noticeably after dark, especially along the water channels where the air picks up moisture from the reflecting pools.

What to wear

  • Flat shoes: the garden paths are uneven cobblestone; heels are a bad idea on the gravel sections
  • A jacket: in May and June, one light layer is usually enough; October through January, bring something warmer (temperatures can drop to 10–12°C by the end of the circuit)
  • Strollers are fine; the Reja del Jardín entrance is fully accessible

Photography notes

  • The open terraces of Zone 2 (The Journey) give the widest projection surfaces; best for long-exposure shots
  • Exposures of 1–2 seconds pick up the laser geometry without blowing out highlights
  • Do not point camera sensors directly at the laser installations. There is a real risk of sensor damage
  • Strobe lights and lasers are used throughout, worth noting for photosensitive visitors

Build your evening

The show finishes before 9:30 pm on most evenings (earlier slots wrap around 8:45 pm), which leaves time for dinner. The Judería is five minutes on foot from the Alcázar entrance. Restaurants along Calle de los Judíos and around the synagogue stay open past 10 pm.

01

Late afternoon: Roman Bridge at sunset

The Roman Bridge lights up around sunset and stays illuminated through the evening. Cross it before heading to the Alcázar: it takes 15 minutes from end to end and the towers are free to photograph.

02

Early evening: Naturaleza Encendida (your slot)

Arrive 15 minutes early at the Reina Isabel entrance. The 45–60 minute circuit puts you out in time for a late dinner.

03

After: Dinner in the Judería

Five minutes' walk north into the Jewish Quarter. For a longer evening, the Hammam Al Ándalus is a short walk away and takes last entries at 11 pm. Book ahead.

Best season for the show

September to November gives the best combination: smaller crowds than July–August, the garden colours shift as autumn sets in, and the temperature contrast between the lit pools and the cooling air works well for photography. Summer slots book fastest and have the most atmosphere but cost more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book Naturaleza Encendida tickets?

Book through the official site at naturalezaencendida.com/en/cordoba/. You can also buy through entradas.com or taquilla.com. A box office at the Puerta Barroca entrance operates during show hours if you want to try for a same-day ticket, though weekend slots in July and August often sell out days in advance.

How long is the Naturaleza Encendida show at the Alcázar?

The circuit takes 45 to 60 minutes at a normal walking pace. Allow 90 minutes total to account for arrival, entry queuing, and the walk around the Alcázar exterior afterwards. The show is self-paced: you move through the three garden zones at your own speed.

Is Naturaleza Encendida suitable for children?

Yes. The self-paced format suits children well since there is no fixed group pace or long audio narration to sit through. Children under 3 enter free, though a free ticket is still required for entry. Strollers are welcome via the Reja del Jardín accessible entrance. Note that strobe lights and laser installations are used throughout, which is worth knowing if your child is photosensitive.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, booking ahead is strongly recommended. Wednesday and Thursday slots are easier to secure a few days out. Saturday evening slots in July and August routinely sell out more than a week in advance. Weekday slots in autumn and winter can often be booked the day before.

What are the session times and days?

Sessions run Wednesday through Friday from 8:15 pm (with new slots every 15 minutes). Saturday and Sunday slots start from 7:00 pm. The show is closed Monday and Tuesday, except on public holidays. It is also closed on December 24, December 31, and January 5.

How much do tickets cost?

Tickets range from €10 to €21. The price varies by date and day: peak Saturday slots in summer reach €21, while midweek slots in off-peak months cost as little as €10. Children aged 4 to 14 and seniors 65+ get reduced rates. Children under 3 enter free. Groups of 10 or more qualify for group rates.

Ready to book the Alcázar night show?

Book directly on the official site. Weekend slots in summer go fast; midweek tickets are often available a day or two out.
